My niece and nephew took out a pedal boat but didn't enjoy it as much as they expected, they said the pedals were a bit rusty, hard to turn and noisy. Take sunscreen and hats - there's no shade to sit under and it's easy to get a bad sunburn in just 45 minutes. Sometimes the phone is busy, just keep trying. We had planned on going one day and I called right as they opened and they were already booked for the day, we were able to go the next day which worked out great. I recommend calling and making a reservation. The boat accommodates 10 which is how many we had in our group which basically made it a private tour, that was an unexpected surprise. He also took patiently took photos of our group and they turned out great. He answered all our questions and has a great sense of humor, you can tell he loves his job (and really, what's not to love). He also has great recommendations for things to do in the area. Capt Fabian knows all sorts of information about the different houses and the lake in general. The pontoon boat ride around Lake Harmony was a lot of fun.

You’ll find that tools and traps from the Portal series will adorn these harder levels. In the early game, things are basically just bridges, but the deeper you get, the more complex your structures become. Or you could go wacky and try your own weird style. Suspension, truss, cable, arch, etc… are all viable bridge types you can create within the game. So using a little engineering know-how will lead you to success in all of Bridge Constructor: Portal’s 60 levels. The Bridge Constructor series uses a realistic physics engine to follow the laws of structural engineering. Adding in some of Portal’s characteristic humor and you have the makings of a fun time. As an Aperture Science employee, you’re tasked with moving Aperture Science vehicles to an exit by crossing gaps and deadly traps. In the latest release of the series, the world of Valve’s Portal is mixed in. The trick being that your bridge must be structurally sound enough to get them across without breaking. Get people across a bridge, onto an island, using a bridge you designed. The very first title was basic enough in its premise. But, anyone looking for a heavy dose of story or a treasure trove of Portal-related content shouldn’t expect much. The Bridge Constructor series has been around for quite a while now, with each title basically taking the same formula and adding a new aesthetic or narrative wrapper around it. Ultimately, Bridge Constructor Portal feels like a solid little collection of architectural challenges that will keep puzzle-hungry physics-lovers with plenty to do. Familiar references are peppered throughout, but ultimately the crossover layer feels thin and does little more than string a collection of challenges together. Yes, this is another Bridge Constructor game, but this time around everyone’s favorite (endearingly murderous) AI, GLaDOS, is back to lead you through test chambers reminiscent of the Portal series. It’s not a game-breaker, but by the later levels you’ll wonder why this option isn’t present. So, instead of making a quick tweak and resuming the test from this point, you must restart the entire test and watch the steady forklifts mosey on down the line. This proves time-consuming for the longer trials when you’ve mastered 95% of the level, only to have a slight design hiccup at the end. One important frustration to lay out is that as you run tests on your creations, fast-forwarding isn’t possible. However, the physics are surprisingly tight once the basics are understood, and as the difficulty increases, so too does satisfaction in the gameplay. I had an inkling of a feeling this may have been a design glitch because during these segments the entire scope of the screen wouldn’t populate and the command options weren’t fully populating for me. The opening tutorial, laid out in the first handful of trials, is a bit clunky - you need to play through the whole thing in one sitting (an hour or so once you get your bearings) and strangely even just pausing the game or accessing the menu isn’t possible for long stretches. By the 10th trial, and countless stick figure deaths, I knew these early dreams were way off the mark. When I built my first bridge (after trying to just Evil Knievel it with a flying forklift ramp), I found myself excited for the next challenge and wondered if my career would have been better off as an engineer. As the learning curve grows, so too will the complexity of the strategies you employ. That’s where bridges and reinforcing cables come in. Sounds simple enough, right? The kicker is that each level continually dials up the trial, and in time, acid water, locked gates, and turrets join the party to harsh your buzz. In Bridge Constructor Portal, you are tasked with completing a series of challenges in which you lead a forklift (driven automatically by stick figures) toward a designated exit. Lower trim levels increased from an EPA-estimated 22 mpg to 23 mpg, and the AWD Platinum is up from 21 to 22 mpg. It doesn’t sacrifice gas mileage, which is up 1 mpg combined in AWD versions over the 2020 model (the last model year sold). That change is meant to improve the Pathfinder’s off-road ability, its towing durability, its driving dynamics and more - and in most ways, it delivers. What’s new is what that engine is connected to: a conventional nine-speed automatic transmission, replacing the unloved continuously variable automatic transmission in the old Pathfinder. Powering the 2022 Pathfinder is the same 3.5-liter V-6 that’s in the outgoing model - it makes 284 horsepower and 259 pounds-feet of torque, which is unchanged from the previous Pathfinder. It Expects You to Drive Like the Family’s in There Suffice it to say, it both looks and feels big - this was not an effort to slim down the SUV, this was an effort to make it look more rugged and aggressive, and it worked well. Its geometric looks make the new Pathfinder feel like a larger vehicle than the one it’s replacing, but the overall dimensions don’t change all that much. The slim headlights taper into the wide and prominent fenders, with the taillights stretching across the rear to again emphasize the Pathfinder’s width. I have to say it looks much, much better than the last Pathfinder, with definite family resemblance to the latest angular Nissans like the larger Armada and smaller Rogue. It’s actually a little shorter than the outgoing model, but changes its proportions by being taller and wider.Ģ022 Nissan Pathfinder | photo by Leslie Cunningham This new fifth-generation model is a complete departure that incorporates some styling cues from the original Pathfinder, such as the forward-swept C-pillar, three-slot grille and overall squared-off, thick body styling. The fourth-generation Pathfinder was a generic blob-shaped thing that bore no family resemblance to the chunky original 1986 model at all. Related: 2022 Nissan Pathfinder: Going Rogue The Family Resemblance Is Strong I drove the new ’22 Pathfinder through Southeast Michigan recently to see if Nissan’s moves to butch up the new Pathfinder have paid off. The latest automaker to do that is Nissan, which has redesigned the latest 2022 Pathfinder three-row to be more rugged, more outdoorsy and slightly more capable in the dirt than its solidly street-oriented predecessor without giving up any of the luxury, safety and connectivity that modern families expect in an SUV. But the trend we’ve spotted for the 2020s seems to be an effort by automakers to recapture some semblance of that off-road adventurism after decades of moving toward making them glorified tall wagons. Somewhere along the way, they became eight-seat family vehicles, replacing the station wagon and minivan in most driveways. They weren’t luxurious and they weren’t comfortable they were work wagons used by forest rangers and farmers. When SUVs first arrived on the American scene, they were purpose-built, off-road adventure and utility vehicles. No combination of numbers and letters evoke more emotion than Toyota’s “2JZGTE”, especially when they are followed by the term “fully-built.” Heavily tweaked by the power brokers at XS Engineering in Huntington Beach, CA, the inline-six motor features a pair of Crower bumpsticks to provide a turbo-friendly powerband. Together with an RPS racing clutch and lightweight flywheel, the Supra has no problem transferring the boosted ponies from the crank to the rear wheels.Īt the heart of the setup is the 3.0L engine that is widely considered as the Don Corleone of all Japanese motors. Extremely rare and more likely to be found on Super GT race cars, this race-ready tranny is a certified “1-of-1” piece and is tougher to find than a Shaquille O’Neal jump shot. From a driver’s perspective, the most obvious modification is the Getrag six-speed sequential transmission. But of course, when you invest $90,000 in a vehicle that has been meticulously built by one of Japan’s most well-respected companies, you have to expect something a little out of the ordinary. It was evident from the get-go that Ghayour’s new Supra wasn’t anything like his previous project cars. However, he was fascinated with the potential of the Toyota Supras that his younger brother had been building, so he decided to bite the bullet by purchasing the Do-Luck USA vehicle for his very own use. After an appearance at SEMA Las Vegas, the Supra landed in Ghayour’s hands and he’s recently been doing his best to shed the car’s corporate trailer queen persona.Īs a muscle car gearhead-turned-import tuner, Ghayour has built a number of vehicles, including Chevrolet Camaros, varying versions of Mitsubishi 3000GTs and an Acura NSX. The car caught the eye of car building guru RJ De Vera of RO_JA Wheels / American Racing and was purchased from Do-Luck USA to help promote RO_JA’s import image. Originally built by Do-Luck USA in Kent, WA for demo purposes, the Supra posed alongside the company’s Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 at events up and down the West Coast. Farhad Ghayour of Phoenix, AZ was fortunate enough to find this extremely unique 1994 Toyota Supra and didn’t think twice about shelling out the coin to grab it. There are countless aftermarket parts available for the Supra, as the vehicle can morph from low-key street cruiser to high-powered rocket-on-wheels with just a few add-ons. Sporting 300hp and a drivetrain that’s even more bulletproof than Superman, Toyota’s flagship performance vehicle is at the top of almost every tuner’s want list. Not all of the showdowns strike that eerie note, however, and the fact that the story is told from David’s perspective helps balance out the more intense sequences because his voice is one of good intentions and innocent determination, not to mention many delightfully lousy metaphors. The event, the mother’s reaction and the related descriptions can be disturbing. For example, in the prologue an infant is turned to ashes and bones in the arms of its mother. However, the book has many battle scenes with several instances of violence. “Steelheart” was written for a young adult audience, and there’s little to none as far as profanity and sexual content. David and the others have plenty to do and overcome before they can even hope to attempt the impossible. After all, Steelheart may be the most powerful Epic in Newcago, but he’s certainly not the only one. New challenges arise as the Reckoners begin forming and executing their plans. Unfortunately for him, his wooing ability is woefully underdeveloped.īut little time exists for romance. But when he meets Megan, a beautiful Reckoner, he finds his attention diverted at times to something other than revenge. All Epics have a weakness that neutralizes their powers, and David’s memory of what happened at the bank, the only time Steelheart has ever been injured, could be the only key to Steelheart’s weakness and ultimate undoing.ĭavid is now 18, and his focus has always been to defeat Steelheart. Fortunately for David, he has something irresistible to offer. Tracking down the Reckoners is challenging, and harder still is becoming one of them. He decides to recruit the help of the Reckoners, a group of humans who study Epics to the end of learning their weaknesses and killing them. Ten years have passed, and his one goal in life is to bring Steelheart down. He exercised that particular power to transform most of Chicago and part of Lake Michigan before becoming the emperor of “Newcago.”ĭavid became an orphan when his father died. He’s virtually indestructible, he can fly and when he’s enraged he can turn inanimate objects into steel. Many people thought the Epics would use their powers to help mankind. The stronger Epics usually have more than one power. Steelheart is one of the most powerful of the Epics, ordinary humans who gained extraordinary powers a year after the red star called Calamity appeared in the sky. 24.ĭavid Charleston was 8 years old when he went to a Chicago bank with his father and saw him brutally murdered by the Epic known as Steelheart. That story became the 386-page “Steelheart” (Delacorte Books for Young Readers, $18.99, ages 14 and up), which is Sanderson’s first novel written for young adults and is scheduled to be released on Sept. "And then the story of a young man who wanted to bring one of these people down but didn’t have any powers himself really stuck with me and started to develop into this story.” “And it turned into a story about a world where people started gaining amazing powers but only evil people got them," he said. Sanderson, the author of the internationally best-selling Mistborn trilogy, had written many books about people who gain and use awesome powers, and he wanted to try writing one that took a different route. That idea joined another he’d already had in his mind: “What if the good guys didn’t always have the power?” “And I was horrified, right? Because I was like, ‘Where did that come from, that side of me? It’s a good thing I don’t have superpowers!’ ” “I had this immediate guttural reaction of, ‘You’re lucky I don’t have superpowers, because I would totally blow your car off the road!’ ” Sanderson said of the incident. Brandon Sanderson was driving along one day when someone cut him off in traffic. Therefore in two (2) molecules of the substance there must be six (6) Fe atoms. In each molecule of this substance there are three (3) Fe atoms. This term expresses two (2) molecules of Fe 3O 4. For example we will look at the following term. There are many different ways and systems of doing this, but for all methods, it is important to know how to count the number of atoms in an equation. To do this we have to figure out the relative number of molecules of each term expressed by the term's coefficient.īalancing a chemical equation is essentially done by trial and error. We have to make sure that the number of atoms of each particular element in the reactants equals the number of atoms of that same element in the products. We know from the Law of Conservation of Mass (which states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed) that this simply cannot occur. If this were the case, the reaction would be quite spectacular: an aluminum atom would appear out of nowhere, and two (2) iron atoms and one (1) oxygen atom would magically disappear. Since no coefficients are in front of any of the terms, it is easy to assume that one (1) mole of Al and one (1) mole of Fe 30 4 react to form one (1) mole of Al 20 3. This is the case when the equations are not properly balanced. Balancing Chemical EquationsSometimes, however, we have to do some work before using the coefficients of the terms to represent the relative number of molecules of each compound. So, 40grams of calcium makes one mole, 80 grams makes two moles, etc. The atomic or molecularweight of a substance in grams makes up one mole of the substance. For example, calcium has an atomic weight of 40 grams. Thus, you have the same number of moles of AgNO 3, NaCl, AgCl, NaNO 3.Ĭonverting between moles and grams of a substance is often important. This conversion can be easily done when the atomic and/or molecularweights of the substance(s) are known. In the equation above there are no numbers in front of the terms, so each coefficient is assumed to be one (1). Similarily, if you have a mole of carrots, you have 6.023 x 10 23 carrots. If you have a dozen carrots, you have twelve of them. A mole is similar to a term like a dozen. A mole simply represents Avogadro's number (6.023 x 10 23) of molecules. The MoleGiven the equation above, we can tell the number of moles of reactants and products. The graphic below works to capture most of the concepts described above: For example, in the graphic below, the notation above and below the arrows shows that we need a chemical Fe 2O 3, a temperature of 1000 degrees C, and a pressure of 500 atmospheres for this reaction to occur. This information, such as a value for temperature, show what conditions need to be present for a reaction to occur. On some occasions, a variety of information will be written above or below the arrows. If no coefficient is shown, a one (1) is assumed. This amount can represent either the relative number of molecules, or the relative number of moles (described below). Finally, the (g) sign means that the compound is a gas.Ĭoefficients are used in all chemical equations to show the relative amounts of each substance present. The (aq) sign stands for aqueous in water and means the compound is dissolved in water. The (l) sign means the substance is a liquid. The (s) sign means that the compound is a solid. Often chemical equations are written showing the state that each substance is in. Since they undergo a chemical process, they are changed fundamentally. The equation shows that the reactants (AgNO 3 and NaCl) react through some process (->) to form the products (AgCl and NaNO 3). In this equation, AgNO 3 is mixed with NaCl. For example:ĪgNO 3(aq) + NaCl(aq) -> AgCl (s) + NaNO 3(aq) You will have a chance to review naming schemes, or nomenclature, in a later reading.Ī chemical equation is an expression of a chemical process. We call chlorine "chloride" in this case because of its connection to sodium. To represent a molecule of table salt, sodium chloride, we would use the notation "NaCl", where "Na" represents sodium and "Cl" represents chlorine. For example, the symbol "C"represents an atom of carbon, and "H" represents an atom of hydrogen. Successin chemistry depends upon developing a strong familiarity with these basic symbols. What is a chemical equation? In chemistry, we use symbols to represent the various chemicals. Given enough information, one can use stoichiometry to calculate masses, moles, and percents within a chemical equation. Chemical StoichiometryStoichiometry is the accounting, or math, behind chemistry. In April 2007, he and three friends swam 400 feet under the cover of dark, using waterproof bags as flotation devices, to Discovery Island, a Disney wildlife attraction in Bay Lake, Florida, that was shut down in 1999. Perez soon became famous well beyond Miami's urb ex scene. But Perez quickly realized there was no less forgotten history to mine in the Magic City than in Philly or Detroit.īy the time he was in his early 20s, he and a small, dedicated crew were regularly trespassing on a range of fascinating, forgotten Miami sites: Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, the Aerojet facility, Everglades missile silos. Unlike Northeast and Midwest towns packed with forgotten factories and theaters, the more recently developed Miami isn't a natural hotbed for urban exploration. By 1996, the movement was taking off online via message boards such as. In the mid-'90s, urb exing was generally unknown in Miami, but Perez discovered he wasn't alone. "I was like, Wow, that's much more interesting than an insane asylum," Perez says. He returned to take photographs of the crumbling walls and began researching, soon learning that the site once housed a Nike missile-launching facility built after the Cuban Missile Crisis and later served as a clandestine CIA communications hub. Immigration and Naturalization Service facility on Krome Avenue that locals had nicknamed "the Asylum." Once, while looking for a phone box, he explored an abandoned, graffiti-streaked former U.S. Perez - a restless adrenaline junkie - would hack phone boxes in remote areas. Holmes Braddock High School, he began "phone phreaking," the proto-hacking fad of stealing free calls by copying AT&T long-distance codes. Shane Perez had never heard of the movement when, as a teenager attending West Kendall's G. Modern urb exing might have begun in Australia, where spelunkers expanded from caves into Sydney's drainage systems. One hundred 20 years later, Walt Whitman wrote about exploring shuttered New York subway tunnels. According to the blog Infiltration, many consider the first urb exer to be a Frenchman named Philibert Aspairt, who became posthumously famous in 1793 when his body was discovered 11 years after he got lost while charting underground Parisian catacombs by candlelight. "I've always been into it and had a kind of disregard for established things."Īs long as cities have locked up their forgotten corners, curious souls have risked life and limb to traverse them. "I don't really live a conventional life," Perez says. "I think where we draw the line is actually entering a place," says Paul George, a historian at HistoryMiami.īut for urban explorers, it's the only way to live. Police and some historians condemn explorers like Perez and Bulit for flouting the law and trampling potentially historic sites. They also never vandalize property, because they say their aim is to explore and document what they see. Instead, they look for open or missing doors or windows at abandoned sites. Like most Urb Exers, Bulit and his crew never force their way into buildings. The group is small but growing, in part because a local pioneer named Shane Perez gained national attention by starring in a documentary about the hobby and by sparking international headlines for getting banned from Disney World after exploring an abandoned theme park. Around the world, thousands like him are part of a subculture of adventurers called urban explorers - or "urb exers" - whose obsession is infiltrating forgotten places and documenting what they find.īulit and his ilk have explored dozens of Miami-Dade sites - from trashed hospitals to waterlogged missile silos - and posted photos and stories on their website,. "But I've seen things with my own eyes that people will never see."įor folks like Bulit, the Aerojet facility is the Holy Grail: a fascinating, dangerous place that's alive with skin-crawling history. "People will always ask, 'You walked miles into the Everglades to see a hunk of metal?' or 'Why would you go into a place like that?'" says Bulit, a slight, agile 23-year-old from Hialeah. They've explored the site scores of times, risking arrest, asbestos exposure, and fights with drugged-out metal scrappers. Few people left in Dade still remember when the Aerojet-Dade rocket facility churned out cutting-edge Cold War technology that rattled windows all the way to Biscayne Bay during test firings.īut Bulit and his crew know all about it. The dilapidated building, surrounded by miles of rusty fence, lies five miles down an abandoned road on the edge of the Everglades. The light glints off a mammoth cylindrical object: the casing for an AJ-260-2 motor, one of the largest rockets ever built.įor 25 years, the monstrosity has lain dormant under a huge slab of steel beneath the floor of an empty warehouse. David Bulit crawls through a rusted metal hatch and shines a flashlight down a long, dark, and waterlogged silo. |
